Borzou graduated from the Eugene Lang College of the New School for Social Research and Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism, both in New York.

He was named a 2005 Pulitzer Prize finalist for his coverage of Iraq and was part of the Baghdad team named 2007 Pulitzer Prize finalists for the Los Angeles Times. He was also named a 2010 Pulitzer Prize finalist for coverage of Iran.
