Class VII, Thursday, Oct. 12, 2000, 1:30 p.m.
Discussion:: Guest speaker Scott Medintz, senior editor at Money magazine. Let's chat with Mr. Medintz about mid-term assignments. Review previous weeks' campaign finance research.
Lab: Consumer services websites.
Try to find sources: get out your papers and pens and try to use the Internet to come up with experts and average users for your stories.
Reading: Several best-of-the-web articles to aid you in completing your mid-term assignments.
Using your skills as a reporter and the tools you've acquired in this class, write an article on the category you've chose. Detail some of the best websites in your category and how to use them. You have the option to write a straightforward piece about a trend or phenomenon in your area of interest or a series of website reviews linked together by a medium sized overview piece. The more people you actually call and speak with sources, the better a grade you will get. If you interview a customer or an expert or website operator or all three or more, you will do better than if you just interview one person, or none. At least 1,500 words. Hand me a copy of the story in class next week and email me a copy of your story before Oct. 19, 2000, at 11:59 p.m.
